Dry Needling of Athletes - Level 2

The premier dry needling certification course for athletic trainers and sports physical therapists. This is the second course of the 2-course dry needling qualification course program. NOTE: to become fully certified as a CMTPT, completion of Dry Needling - Level 3 will be required.

Description

Introduction

The DN-AT 2/2 course builds on the knowledge and skills of the DN-AT 1/2 course.

Students will be introduced to the clinical aspects of myofascial pain, the etiology and scientific basis of myofascial pain and dry needling, and dry needling for injury prevention, maintenance, and performance enhancement of athletes.

The DN-AT 2/2 course will bring the athletic trainer to the highest level of clinical proficiency in the management of athletes with myofascial pain.  All muscles of the DN-AT 1 course will be reviewed in detail, preparing students for the final practical examinations leading to the CMTPT/DN-AT qualification! The pertinent theoretical information discussed during the DN-AT 1 will also be reviewed in preparation for the theoretical examination.

Many muscles commonly addressed in clinical practice are included, such as the pronator teres, wrist flexors, hand muscles, the posterior neck muscles, the sternocleidomastoid muscles, the upper trapezius muscles, the lumbar paraspinals, the quadratus lumborum, the psoas and iliacus muscles, the deep hip rotators, and several lower extremity and foot muscles. Students will also be introduced to the current scientific basis for dry needling for scar tissue, fascial adhesions, enthesopathies, and tendinopathies.

Students will review the anatomy, function, and dry needling techniques for each muscle.

The live Intramuscular Electrical Stimulation (IMES) course is a practical, hands-on course designed for clinicians who already completed the online IMES course. During the course, students will review and practice recommended treatment approaches using IMES for patients with neck, back, arm (epicondylalgia), hand, low back, pelvic, hip, and leg pain and dysfunction, and for muscle strengthening and motor recovery.

More Information

Intramuscular electrical stimulation (IMES) is increasingly used in clinical practice to modify or enhance the effects of needling interventions. Yet, no published guidelines exist to assist clinicians in their clinical reasoning for selecting stimulation parameters or determining adequate dosage for the use of IMES for any musculoskeletal condition. This online course will teach clinicians how to safely and effectively implement IMES into practice based on the most recent scientific evidence.

In this hybrid (live and online) lecture, Jan Dommerholt will review the current scientific literature on myofascial pain and dry needling.
