Dry Needling of Athletes - Level 1

The premier dry needling course for athletic trainers and physical therapists working with athletes. The first of a two-course dry needling qualification. NOTE: to become fully certified as a CMTPT, completion of Dry Needling of Athletes - Level 3 is required.

Description

Introduction

This course is designed to incorporate dry needling in the overall care of athletes and is particularly suited for physical therapists with an athletic patient population and athletic trainers. Although not all athletic ' state boards have approved dry needling by athletic trainers or have a defined position on the topic, an increasing number of athletic trainers are being trained in dry needling. According to a recent study, 89% of the dry needling competencies are provided through entry-level education within the AT 5th Edition Competencies leaving 11% of dry-needling-specific education for post-graduate continuing education course programs. Myopain Seminars has been teaching dry needling courses since 1996 (!) and throughout the years, we have trained many athletic trainers and sports physical therapists. Dr. Jan Dommerholt, President and CEO of Myopain Seminars, has taught dry needling courses to the clinical staff of numerous universities, professional sports teams within the NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, and organizations such as the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), and the Women’s Association of Tennis Professionals (WTA), and many of these courses have included athletic trainers.

We are excited to launch this Dry Needling course program, designed to meet the needs of athletes, especially for athletic trainers and sports physical therapists. Myopain Seminars is an approved BOC course provider (P8248).

Course Description

The DN-AT 1 course features a brief introduction to the history of dry needling, trigger points, and myofascial pain, an in-depth review of possible adverse events, the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Standards within the context of dry needling, and an introduction to pain sciences relevant to athletic training. Many muscles commonly addressed in clinical practice are included, such as the infraspinatus, deltoid, triceps, biceps, brachialis, brachioradialis, wrist extensors, supinator and anconeus, the pectoralis major, latissimus dorsi and subscapularis (partially) muscles, the gluteal muscles (minimus, medius, and maximus), the tensor fascia latea, the hip adductor muscles, the quadriceps and hamstrings, and gastrocnemius and soleus muscles.

Students will review the anatomy, function, and dry needling techniques for each muscle. The course will also address when and how to incorporate dry needling into athletic training for amateur and professional athletes.

The live Intramuscular Electrical Stimulation (IMES) course is a practical, hands-on course designed for clinicians who already completed the online IMES course. During the course, students will review and practice recommended treatment approaches using IMES for patients with neck, back, arm (epicondylalgia), hand, low back, pelvic, hip, and leg pain and dysfunction, and for muscle strengthening and motor recovery.

More Information

Intramuscular electrical stimulation (IMES) is increasingly used in clinical practice to modify or enhance the effects of needling interventions. Yet, no published guidelines exist to assist clinicians in their clinical reasoning for selecting stimulation parameters or determining adequate dosage for the use of IMES for any musculoskeletal condition. This online course will teach clinicians how to safely and effectively implement IMES into practice based on the most recent scientific evidence.
